UN, EBRD experts analyzed reasons for Ukrainian fruits/vegetables export slowing

09.07.2018 22:13 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Within the framework of the joint project «Improving the access of Ukrainian agribusiness to export markets», the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the EBRD have made a research of the Ukrainian fruits/vegetables export potential, Ukrinform says referring to the research. As to the research, presently Ukraine remains a fruits/vegetables net importer, and the needs of its domestic fruits/vegetables market, since early 2018, have been satisfied mainly due to import — what is to be explained with the poor quality of Ukrainian products, outdated technologies and infrastructure. «Theoretically, Ukraine could fully satisfy its domestic market demand thanks with its own fruits/vegetables (even within 2018 second half) and significantly boost its export; however, at same time, for most kinds of seasonal vegetables, and some fruits and berries, Ukraine remains a net importer since early 2018, and the domestic market needs since 2018 beginning are satisfied mainly with imported products. This situation is to be explained with a rather low quality of Ukrainian products,» the research said. As to the research, other reasons of the domestic vegetables, fruits and berries’ low export is that at present Ukrainian domestic over 80% vegetables, fruits/berries’ output is performed by rural individual households or small farms, where products are mostly grown without special compliance with phytosanitary standards — what makes it impossible to start exporting the products. Moreover, the products’ sale period is rather limited in this case, given the low quality of vegetables, fruits and berries as well as the fact that farms and small farmers usually do not have any equipped storage facilities for long-term storage.
