Azarov: We will never afford anyone to downplay the significance of Great Victory

The Government will never afford to minimize historical significance of the victory in the Great World War.
Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykola Azarov announced this during his meeting yesterday with a WW veteran Mykhaylo Zvyagintsev and his fellow soldiers on the eve of the Day of mourning and remembrance of the war victims in Ukraine, Government Portal reports.
«June 22 will always remain for us the Day of mourning and when certain politicians tell that May 9 is the day of mourning I always object. As May 9 for us is the day of Great Victory. As it is in the song: „It is a holiday with tears in the eyes“, but the day of mourning has always been and remains June 22, 1941. We will never afford anyone to downplay the significance of the Great Victory,» Mykola Azarov has said.
The Premier underlined that in 1941 the Victory of the Great World War had not been evident, hence, the meaning of the Great Victory cannot be minimized.
The Prime Minister emphasized the Government continues to pay great attention to veterans, but unfortunately the political forces who are trying to reconsider our history have come to the Parliament. «Most regrettably, into our Parliament there have come representatives of those forces who, in fact, are successors of those who shot in the back. According to the international conventions they were admitted enemies of civilization. I am very sad that in Ukraine, which suffered extremely hard in the GWW times and made a huge contribution into the victory, there can be observed such manifestations that could not even appear in a nightmare,» Mykola Azarov said.
At the same time, the PM considers that we must pay more attention to the issues of history and patriotic education. «It means on the state level we have extremely seriously diminished attention to the history. In general, we are solving economic problems, which are highly complicated and hard, and we overpay attention to them, but this side was given by us to those who would like to humiliate and distort history,» he stressed.
In turn, veterans of the Great World War thanked Prime Minister for the constant attention to their problems, while the Head of the Government invited them on June 22 to lay flowers to the Memorial to the Unknown Soldier together with him on the occasion of the Day of mourning and remembrance of the war victims in Ukraine.
