Progress on global partnership for development is weaker, says UN chief

21.09.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Governments around the world have been urged not to place the burden of financial problems on the backs of the poor. The call was reiterated by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon during the launch of his 2012 report on the MDG Gap Task Force on Thursday, says UN Radio. The Task Force was created five years ago to track progress in strengthening the Global Partnership for Development. That is one of the eight Millennium Development Goals or MDGs which were agreed by world leaders in 2000 to improve people’s lives by fighting poverty, disease and gender inequality. The Secretary General recalled that in March he reported major progress in achieving the MDGs. «Several important global targets — on poverty, water, slums and on parity between girls and boys in primary education — have been met. But, on the global partnership, progress is weaker. Last year, official development assistance declined for the first time in many years. I repeat my call to the international community: do not place the burden of fiscal austerity on the backs of the poor — either in your own countries or abroad,» emphasized Mr. Ban Ki-moon. The Secretary-General commended the donors that have maintained or increased aid despite cutting overall budgets.
