World reaffirms sustainable development commitments as Rio+20 ends

25.06.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — The Rio+20 conference has ended, but the work begins now. That is what UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon told heads of state and government on Friday at the closing ceremony for the three-day event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. He said the Rio+20 outcome document, ’The Future We Want,’ will guide the world on a path to sustainability. «Our job now is to create a critical mass on momentum because the road ahead is long and hard. Too many people remain poor, hungry and vulnerable to easily preventable diseases, and the environmental base that will improve their opportunities for prosperity is under unprecedented threat. No longer can we afford to recklessly consume scarce resources. No longer can we carelessly pollute fragile ecosystems. No longer can we mortgage our future for our short-term needs,» emphasized Ban Ki-moon. The conference ended with more than $500 billion in voluntary commitments by corporations, governments, UN agencies and other organizations, in areas such as energy, sustainable transport, and agriculture.
