Head of UN agriculture agency meets the Pope

15.06.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — The Roman Catholic Church has been urged to renew its support in the fight against hunger at the global and local levels. The appeal was made by the head of the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), José Graziano da Silva during a meeting with Pope Benedict XVI at the Vatican on Thursday. During his meeting with the Pope, José Graziano da Silva said that ending hunger makes political, economic and social sense, and is also a moral imperative. Pope Benedict inquired about the outlook for the forthcoming United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development or Rio+20. Mr Graziano told the Pope that there can be no talk about sustainable development if almost 900 million people go hungry. He also said that poor farmers who depend directly on natural resources to survive will cut down trees if they are not offered any alternatives. The head of FAO urged to Church to encourage its priests to dedicate their masses and sermons to the eradication of hunger during World Food Week to be observed in October.
