Global cereals production to reach new record in 2012

14.06.2012 09:23 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Global cereal production is expected to reach record 2.4 billion tonnes during 2012 on the back of a bumper maize harvest in the United States according to the UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO). In its latest global food situation report, FAO says this year’s global cereals production will be 3.2 per cent higher than in 2011. The agency however says despite the positive global trends, at least 35 countries, the majority of them in Africa, will continue to face serious food shortages mainly as a result of poor rainfall, civil strife and high food prices. It identifies Syria and Yemen as are among the countries experiencing increasing food insecurity driven mainly by internal conflict. «It is likely to have a very positive effect on prices. Countries are building up their stocks a little bit. The global stocks are expected to increase slightly by about 36 million tonnes, to let’s say 548 million tonnes, which I think is one of the highest levels. There are regions particularly West Africa as well as East Africa are under food insecurity situation, that situation is now manifesting itself into higher and higher prices short supplies in local markets which I think is really causing food insecurity,» says FAO expert Kisan Gunjal while explaining the impact of the higher food production.
