ILO: Up to 60 million jobs could be created by green economy

01.06.2012 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — The transition to a greener economy could generate up to 60 million jobs according to a report launched in Geneva on Thursday. The study by the Green Jobs Initiative is a partnership between the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the International Organization of Employers (IOE) and the International Trade Union Congress (ITUC). ILO Director-General, Juan Somavia, says that at least half of the global workforce, an equivalent of 1.5 billion people would be affected by the transition to a greener economy. «The bottom line, from the perspective of jobs is that there can be a net gain of up to 60 million jobs over the next decades by moving to a greener economy. We don’t have to choose between protecting the environment and creating jobs, and I think this is a very important notion. It is not a neither or approach. We can do both and it comes down to the types of policies to be adopted,» admits Somavia. Mr. Somavia said those policies include public and private investment in the greening of production processes. He also said investment in social protection would be required because the transition to a greener economy would create news jobs, but may eliminate others.
