Prysiazhniuk: Agriculture Ministry to regulate prices for agricultural products

According to the results of monitoring 800 food markets in Ukraine, the Ukrainian Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry will draw up a program to monitor food price fluctuations, Ukrainian Agricultural Policy and Food Minister Mykola Prysiazhniuk has said.
«For example, recent results showed that the minimum price for sugar is UAH 5.50 per kilogram in Kirovohrad region and the maximum price is UAH 6.95 per kilogram in Cherkasy region. Therefore, we can see that now there is a difference in prices between the regions,» he said. The minister said that the ministry was conducting a weekly monitoring of 800 food markets in Ukraine regarding prices for agricultural products and identifying similar price fluctuations. «This suggests that in certain regions the local authorities are not using the full potential that can be used to ensure that the consumer has received the lowest prices and the producer the highest possible prices,» Prysiazhniuk added. The development of a network of wholesale markets and farmers markets will contribute to the regulation of prices, he said. «This year, we conducted 11,000 visiting trade fairs all over Ukraine, at which almost UAH 1 billion worth of agricultural products were sold. This suggests that the proceeds came directly to agricultural producers, namely to self-employed farmers. This plays an important social role and allows individual peasants to engage in profitable work at their households,» the minister said. According to Prysiazhniuk, 2,300 food fairs have already been conducted since the beginning of April 2012, at which more than 22,000 tons of agricultural products worth UAH 232.1 million were sold. In addition, the Agricultural Policy and Food Ministry, along with the Association of Wholesale Markets, is conducting a monitoring of the order for agricultural products, so that, along with the Association of Village Heads, to recommend individual farmers what products to grow in vegetable gardens in order to fully cover the needs of demand and regulate the price of food.
