EU-Ukraine Summit to focus mainly on political association and economic integration

At the 15th EU-Ukraine Summit, which is to take place in Kiev on 19 December 2011, Ukraine will be represented by President Viktor Yanukovych and the EU will be represented by Herman Van Rompuy, President of the European Council, and José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission, press release of the EU Council says.
The main focus of discussions at this summit is expected to be Ukraine’s reform agenda, linked to the jointly agreed goal of political association and economic integration standards between the EU and Ukraine.
Regarding political association, the agenda envisages discussion of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, and in particular respect for shared values including human rights, fundamental freedoms and the rule of law.
As for economic integration, the parties are to pay special attention to macro-economic stability, efforts to improve economic governance, in particular management of public finances, and the business and investment climate in Ukraine as well as energy issues.
On its part the EU also intends to raise the issue of mobility, including the latest developments regarding the implementation of the Action Plan on Visa Liberalization, which was presented to Ukraine at the 2010 summit as well as regarding the negotiations on amending the 2008 Visa Facilitation Agreement.
As for regional and international issues, the Summit will focus in particular on the relations with Russia, including on energy, as well as relations with Belarus and with the Republic of Moldova.
"2011 marks the twentieth anniversary of Ukraine’s independence and the 25th anniversary of the Chernobyl accident, this gave both Ukraine and the EU a unique opportunity to reflect on the evolution of their relations and on the road ahead. The European Union and Ukraine share common borders, extensive economic and trade relations, and a common cultural, linguistic and historic heritage. EU-Ukraine cooperation is built on a shared commitment to the rule of law, human rights, democratic principles and fundamental freedoms, " the EU Council’s press release says.
