Developing countries investment in poor countries triples

18.11.2011 08:27 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Foreign investment by developing countries in poorer countries has more than tripled in the last decade. That’s according to a new report by the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) issued on Thursday. UNCTAD says that in the face of a slow economic recovery in developed countries, developing economies could provide poor countries with development opportunities. The report argues the need for better policies so that developing countries can increase foreign direct investment or FDI in poor countries. Supachai Panitchpakdi, the Secretary-General of UNCTAD, says: «We can see that the south-south FDI has more than tripled in the last decade and has now reached the level of shares of 14 per cent of the global FDI south-south flow. And in terms of the consequences from the financial crisis, these south-south flows have greater potential because these are all growing economies with huge reserves, with huge capital now available so they can just grow.»
