Ukraine on threshold of main food products prices sharp decline

27.11.2006 13:00 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As to Serghiy Romaniuk, Deputy Minister of Economics, press-conference report, Ministry expects country retail sale main food products will start actively lowering since Nov 20.

Deputy Minister declared Cabinet and agricultural producers had signed memorandum stipulating main consumption articles (bread, eggs, poultry meat) wholesale prices lowering. As to memorandum, prices should start lowering 2.5–10% (depending on market condition) since Nov beginning.

Romaniuk admitted wholesale traders have fulfilled their memorandum obligations, yet retailers (as proved by Ministry of Economics/State Prices Inspection joint monitoring) are much reluctant to reduce sale mark-ups.

As to Romaniuk, some regions bread retail sale prices have been declined only by 0.2–0.3%, eggs — by just 4%. As to him, poultry meat retail prices are as well just slightly down, — though Kyiv region poultry meat wholesale prices have been already declined by 13%.

Deputy Minister promised Ministry of Economics/State Prices Inspection would carry out retail prices daily monitoring until Dec 1; as to Deputy Minister, Government won’t apply any administrative measures against retail traders, due to similar measures are beyond Government competence.

However, Romaniuk said in this situation some measures can be taken by local authorities: they have right to limit main retail sale consumption articles upper mark-ups as well as to fine economic entities which breach mark-ups limits.
