FAO: Achieving sustainable agriculture requires an integrated approach

As of this week, FAO has issued a new publication, Sustainable Food and Agriculture: An Integrated Approach, a 585-page book aiming to present state-of-the-art evidence on how sustainable agriculture can be continuously improved at different scales, FAO reports.
As to the report, the book brings together the work of 78 experts from FAO as well as a wide array of universities and organizations around the world.
It is organized through 48 chapters and five sections, covering areas ranging from demographics and rural poverty to biodiversity and water scarcity, while also looking at viable examples of how to increase agricultural productivity by integrating different sectors without harming and even increasing existing environmental and social capital. The new book is a comprehensive publication that points the way to how we can improve our food systems.
While speaking at the launch a the book, FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva said the civilization has already reached the limit of the paradigm of the green revolution, it cannot continue to produce foods in the same way as earlier, relying on intensive farm techniques, chemical inputs and mechanization, and so it needs to develop more comprehensive approaches on sustainability.
He stressed that the currents approaches are not able any more to integrate all the global actors and interests and let the agriculture move ahead properly.
