UN: Ebola outbreak within Congo conflict zone ‘remains dangerous and unpredictable’

09.11.2018 19:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As of this week, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General of the World Health Organization (WHO), Jean-Pierre Lacroix, UN Peacekeeping Chief, and Oly Ilunga Kalenga, Congo Health Minister, have made a joint mission to the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak within Congo (near the city of Beni close to the Ugandan border), UN Radio says referring to the UN report. As to the report, they saw the conditions on the ground for themselves, and met local officials, health workers, civil society leaders, and peacekeepers. It is to be admitted, since the Ebola outbreak began this year Aug, there have been 308 cases and 191 deaths, about half of which have been within Beni, which has a population of around 800,000. In meanwhile, the UN Stabilization Mission within Congo, MONUSCO, has taken an active approach within recent weeks to quell armed group activity within the North Kivu area, and protect Beni from conflict. «While this has contributed to a decline of the new cases over the past two weeks, the situation remains of grave concern,» the WHO Chief has said. «To date, 27,000 people have been vaccinated against Ebola, and almost every new patient receives one of four investigational treatments, something which was never previously possible within an Ebola outbreak,» he added. As to him, 91 people have already recovered and returned to their communities thanks to the hard work and joint efforts of national and international responders.
