WHO: over nine of ten children worldwide exposed to deadly air pollution

29.10.2018 19:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As of now, the air pollution is «stunting children’s brains» and affecting their health within more ways than was previously suspected, UN Radio says referring to the WHO ( World Health Organization ) report. As to the report, the WHO is urging the governments worldwide to make concrete policy pledges in order to tackle the problem. Reportedly, presently over nine within 10 youngsters worldwide breathe air that is so polluted, «it puts their health and development at serious risk». It is to be admitted, the report has been launched on the eve of the WHO first Global Conference on Air Pollution and Health (to be held within Geneva). As to the report, about 600,000 children died from acute lower respiratory infections caused by polluted air within 2016. In meanwhile, while commenting on the report, WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus has said the polluted air is poisoning millions of children and ruining their lives. As to the report, one reason why children are especially vulnerable to polluted air is that they breathe more rapidly than adults, absorbing more toxins. «The enormous toll of disease and death revealed by these new data should result in an urgent call to action for the global community, and especially for those within the health sector,» the report reads, noting that the impact of air pollution both inside and outside the home is worst within the low and middle-income countries.
