Zhytomyr region: Researches made European elks trial aerial registration

28.03.2018 16:11 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As of this week, Zhytomyr region researches have made a trial aerial registering of the regional European elk, Government Portal says referring to Ukrainian Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Ostap Semerak report. It is to be admitted, the aerial registering is considered to be the most accurate one among other methods of animal registering, and so it helps to control the migration of animals. As to Semerak, the research has beem made at the initiative of the Ukrainian Ministry of Environmental Protection within the framework of the environmental project «Number of European Elk within Ukrainian Polissya». For the trial aerial registering of the elks (animals entered last year into the Ukrainian Red Book) a special helicopter was used, which kept all the necessary parameters for monitoring (altitude, elks’ routes and distances between them). «The purpose of this event is to determine the optimal parameters of the method of registering of the elks in order to fix their total number within Ukraine. Upon whole, the monitoring has been made at about 30,000 ha territory - where the researchers have watched about a hundred animals from the air,» he admitted. It is to be admitted, this trial aerial registration has been made over the territories of a number of the Zhytomyr region hunting farms.
