World prepares to unite on mercury pollution

25.09.2017 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — The global community is going to gather in Geneva to celebrate an historic international agreement, Minamata Convention on Mercury, that tackles deadly mercury exposure for the first time, UN Radio reports. It is to be admitted, the Minamata Convention on Mercury (named after the Japanese city that experienced the world worst poisoning disaster from the heavy metal ) contains legally binding obligations for Member States. As to the report, the agreement came into force within this year Aug after gaining the support of 50 Member States. Now it is possible that the number of the Member States who will sign up at the meeting in Geneva next week will be about 150. In meanwhile, Uruguay’s Ambassador to China Fernando Lugris, Chair of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee of the Mercury Convention, has said: "This week is going to be very important, it’s going to be a huge celebration. If you see two heads of state coming from the North and the South it’s very important for every single country in the world. And I think the political will is going to be there to celebrate this new instrument that has been called by some the «happy instrument’ because it came at a moment in history when we needed to have an important achievement and it came on the basis of consensus».
