Canada: toxic levels of pesticides discovered in Chinese herbs

05.07.2013 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Greenpeace is putting a red flag up to particular Chinese herbs bought and sold in Canada. Recent tests reveal that one of the herbs tested in Canada had more than 24 pesticides leftover on it. Seven countries in total had the Chinese herbal medicines checked by an independent lab in China, Voice of Russia reports referring to CBC.ca. «Internationally, we were shocked by the quantities of pesticide residues we found in all the samples, some of them with alarming numbers. For example, in Canada, the honeysuckle had over 24 pesticide residues,» Eric Darier, an employee for Greenpeace’s agricultural campaign said. Chinese medicine dealers claim there are rules in place on both the local and federal level, which requires the herbs to be safe. «As a practitioner … we have always been emphasizing the safety of the herbs we give to our patients,» Dr. Michael Chung, a traditional Chinese medicine expert in Vancouver, Canada. «No matter if it is in powder form or the raw herbs form, we always check with our suppliers to make sure they are safe.» No pesticides have been found from traditional Chinese herbs on the Canadian market, according to Health Canada.
