Russia, Latin America boost cooperation

Russia and Latin America are getting closer amid the global financial turbulence and the eurozone crisis as the two economies have shown a stable growth in the past few years. Boosting trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Latin America was the major issue on the agenda of the Moscow-hosted International Investment Forum, Voice of Russia reports.
The event was attended by 26 Latin American Ambassadors to Russia, Russian government officials and businessmen.
This meeting is really overdue, said Mexico’s Ambassador to Russia Rubén Alberto Beltrán Guerrero.
«This conference is a great opportunity to draw the attention of Russian investors to Latin America. It’s a like a bell tolling our awakening. Latin America comprises 33 states and we need to become more open as we are ready for cooperation in various spheres».
The head of Russia’s Commerce Chamber Gregory Petrov said that the awakening has already occurred as the global crisis made Russia understand that it needs more than its one traditional partner - Europe. A dropping demand in the region made Russia refocus to the rapidly growing markets of Latin America.
«Last year Russia and Latin America enjoyed a trade turnover of 16 bln dollars which signals a great potential of bilateral economic growth».
Petrov also said that Latin America is buying more Russian hi-tech products and has gone far beyond oil and gas cooperation, especially Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Venezuela.
This means that the current economic and geopolitical map is being reshaped.
Georgy Petrov also mentioned tourism as a great cooperation area.(voice)
«Last year a record number of Russians visited the Dominican Republic - over 120,000 people, then comes Cuba with 75,000 holiday-makers from Russia while 50,000 spent their vacation in Mexico and Russians are also exploring other countries in the region».
