Yanukovych to lead Ukrainian delegation at summit in Brussels

President Viktor Yanukovych, President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso will attend the EU-Ukraine summit in Brussels (Belgium), scheduled for February 25, acting director of the Foreign Ministry’s Information Policy Department Yevhen Perebyinis told a press briefing, ForUm reports.
«The Ukrainian delegation at the summit will be led by Viktor Yanukovych. The European Union will be represented by Mr. Rompuy and Mr. Barroso,» he said.
According to him, the parties will sum up the cooperation between Ukraine and the EU in 2012 and will form the priorities for 2013.
In addition, according to the Foreign Ministry official, the main issues to be discussed at the Summit will be the signing of the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU, as well as the steps that the parties plan to implement in order to create conditions for the signing of the document at the summit of «Eastern Partnership» in November.
According to him, the Ukrainian party plans to present the results and plans for the implementation of economic and social reforms to achieve European standards.
In addition, special attention will be paid to the prospects of trade and economic cooperation.
«In accordance with the reached agreements, the creation of the free trade area with the EU can be started immediately after the signing of the Association Agreement,» Perebyinis said.
The parties are also to discuss further cooperation in the energy sector, in particular in the modernization of the Ukrainian gas transportation system and support from the international financial institutions in this regard.
Yevhen Perebyinis also said that during the summit Ukraine intends to present progress in the action plan for the introduction of a visa-free regime with the EU, and to discuss the prospects for enacting the agreement on simplification of visa regime with the EU, signed in the summer of 2012.
