International Year of Water Cooperation launched

12.02.2013 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — The world is inching toward a water crisis as the number of users increases dramatically. That warning was made on Monday by Ambassador Csaba Kőrösi of Hungary during the launch of the International Year of Water Cooperation at UN Headquarters in New York, UN Radio reports. He said that 2.5 billion people will live very soon in areas of water scarcity and the hydrological extremes such as droughts and floods that are occurring now, are going to increase. «We are inching towards a water crisis. The same amount of water is available today as 10,000 years ago but the number of users today is 8,000 times more than then. By 2030 the food production on this globe most probably is going to increase by 50 per cent and, mind you, 75 per cent of water consumption is going to agriculture today,» Mr. Kőrösi admitted. The International Year of Water Cooperation was kick started by the UN lead cultural agency UNESCO with a high level event at its headquarters in Paris. The objective of the Year, declared by the UN General Assembly in December 2010, is to raise awareness about the potential for increased cooperation and the challenges faced in water management.
