Ukrainian Grain Association, Ukrainian Agricultural Confederation And Association Of Farmers Ask MPs To Take Under Personal Control Case On Charges Against Kozachenko Of Destabilization Of Grain Market
08.04.2003 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) - The Ukrainian Grain Association, Ukrainian Agricultural Confederation and the Association of Farmers and Private Land Users ask deputies of the Verkhovna Rada to take under personal control the case on charges of the General Prosecutor Office against ex-Vice Prime Minister Leonid Kozachenko of abuse of office. This was disclosed in the statement, the text of which Ukrainian News obtained. "We ask you, Volodymyr Mykhailovych (Lytvyn), and address every deputy with a request to take under personal control Kozachenko’s case," reads the statement. The Ukrainian Grain Association and Ukrainian Agricultural Confederation ask MPs to prevent destabilization of the grain market, to put the question of the grain market situation and that of charges against ex-Vice Prime Ministers on agenda and consider it urgently. In their address, these public organizations of the agricultural market turn attention of the deputies to the difficulties expected this season in the sector because of bad weather and intentions of companies to reduce investments to agriculture because of GPO’s charges against Kozachenko and traders. The statement of the Ukrainian Grain Association and Ukrainian Agricultural Confederation express their concern over possible reforming of the agricultural sector in connection of the charges brought by prosecution bodies against grain market participants. As Ukrainian News earlier reported, Kyiv’s Pechersk district court last Thursday sanctioned Kozachenko's detention for the duration of the pre-trial investigation, because the General Prosecutor Office charges Kozachenko with abuse of office (Article 364 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code) and evasion of taxes (Article 212). In particular, the Prosecutor Office charges Kozachenko of assisting grain export on underestimated prices and inflicting economic damage to the state in the amount of UAH 1.5 billion. Kozachenko served as Ukraine's deputy prime minister in charge of the agro-industrial sector from June 2001 to November 2002. (Ukrainian News)
