Nepal. Agriculture GDP to rise 1.05 pc

13.07.2010 11:54 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — The government has estimated that the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of agriculture and forestry sectors will grow by 1.05 percent to 33 percent in 2009/10 as compared to the figures of previous year, thanks to rise in other products despite decline in major food production. Aggregate production of major crops — rice, wheat, maize, millet and barley — is estimated to have declined by 4.35 percent to 7.76 million tons in 2009/10. Total production of these crops had increased by 0.6 percent to 8.11 million tons in 2008/09. According to the Economic Survey released by the Ministry of Finance (MoF) on Sunday, total area covered by these crops is estimated at 3.38 million hectares, down 1.02 percent from 3.41 million hectares recorded a year earlier. «Though there has been some increase in production of wheat and barley, significant decline in the production of rice and maize has resulted in the overall decline in food production,» the survey states. The survey, however, stated that production of cash crops such as sugarcane, oil seeds, potatoes, and jute is estimated to have risen by 13.2 percent to reach 5.22 million tons. The cultivation area of cash crops is also estimated to have risen by 11.36 percent. With the decline in the production, total share of food crops in total crops is estimated to have fallen 45.8 percent in 2009/10 from 49.6 percent recorded a year earlier. The share of cash crop is expected to rise to 30.8 percent from 28.1 percent. Despite decline in production of pulses in 2008/09, the total production of pulses --lentil, black gram, pigeon peas, soybean and grams — is expected to increase by 2.74 percent to 262,000 tons. Production of fruits is expected to rise by 2.76 percent to reach at 750,000 tons against 686,000 tons recorded last year. In the like manner, production of green vegetables is estimated to have risen by 10.21 percent to 3 million tons from 2.73 million tons. Based on Agro-production Index, the current fiscal year is expected to witness a decline in food crops by 5.88 percent, whereas green vegetables is expected to rise by 7.2 percent, fruits by 22 percent, meat by 2.66 percent and milk by 4.05 percent. The survey has also estimated that the number of cattle heads grew up by 0.34 percent to 7.19 million this year as compared to figure of last year. Milk production is estimated to jump by 3.5 percent to 1.49 million tons this year. Egg and fish production is also expected to increase by 2.1 percent and 3 percent to 643.2 million piece and 49,730 tons respectively.
