Agrarians go on strike May 19 if Cabinet refuses consulting with peasants

Ukrainian agrarians are going to launch protest actions this year May 19 if Cabinet disregards Agrarian-Industrial Complex representatives demands on holding consultations to fix country further agrarian-industrial policy, reported Leonid Kozachenko, Ukrainian Agrarian Confederation (UAC) President, May 12 . Kozachenko didn’t say what particular protest actions might be taken. “For instance, 2 trains with peasants are ready to come to Kyiv from Lugansk region. I don’t know what actions will take a thousand and a half peasants – and these are peasants who will come from just one region – in Kyiv,” declared UAC President. However, Kozachenko is hopeful Government will begin dialogue with agrarian associations. “If we approve at least half of Cabinet further actions on grains/sunoil export limitations and sugar/meat industries policy, we won’t take any serious measures,” stated UAC President. Volodymyr Klymenko, Ukrainian Grain Association (UGA) President, declared that since Yuliya Tymoshenko Cabinet was formed, Coordinative Council for Agriculture (subordinated to Cabinet) hasn’t held a single meeting. As to Agro Perspective earlier report, this year May 5 oil extraction plants went on permanent strike demanding to cancel sunoil export quoting. UAC threatened to Cabinet with large-scale protest actions (to be launched after Easter holidays) if grains/sunoil export quoting remains. As to Agro Perspective, Cabinet had limited wheat export to 1,200.000 MT (barley – 900,000 MT, sunoil – 300,000 MT). Representatives of Agrarian-Industrial Complex branch organizations affirm country domestic grains/sunoil markets are significantly overstocked; representatives say Ukrainian grains/sunoil branches (country Agrarian-Industrial Complex main export-oriented branches) are now much subject to crisis.
