Ukrainian biogas output from sugar beet pulp expected to rise

05.07.2018 22:13 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As of this week, while speaking within a conference AgroPower: Biogas, Yuriy Epshtein, Accord Ltd Director, said Ukraine is experiencing a sugar biogas output boom - as domestic sugar plants are getting restored and simultaneously biogas output complexes are launched, Ukrainian National Association of Sugar Producers reports. «Beet pulp is a free energy-intensive raw material, which enables the domestic biogas output complexes to work year-round. These complexes can be large and powerful - as a lot of pulp accumulates on domestic sugar plants (about 80% of the sugar beet mass). It is to be admitted, on the one hand, pulp is a toxic product what gets quickly spoiled, and on the other hand, 1 ton of the pressed sugar beet pulp can give 100–105 m3 of biogas,» Epshtein explained. As to Epshtein, small biogas output complexes are better not to be built - since even if the domestic green tariff beomes s more advantageous, their return to capital will be long. «Thus, a 100 kW biogas output complex price is EUR800,000 - but even this tariff does not encourage investors to invest money. So, the biogas output complex power should be 1 MW and up,» Epshtein stressed. It is to be admitted, within EU countries, now there are restrictions imposed on the biogas output from the food products’ resources. Within Ukraine, however, there are no such restrictions, so experts forecast a further boost of the sugar beet biogas output.
