UN Agency: HIV/AIDS still impacting work and costing milliards of lost earnings

As of yesterday, the International Labour Organization (ILO) issued ‘The impact of HIV and AIDS on the world of work: Global estimate’, focused on the economic and social toll HIV and AIDS continuing to take on workers around the world,UN Radio reports.
It is to be admitted, the estimate has been prepared in collaboration with the UNAIDS ( UN agency dedicated to tackling the virus).
As to the report, the estimate examines the past and future effects of HIV epidemic, and development of antiretroviral therapy (ART); besides, it also evaluates the HIV epidemic economic and social impact on workers and their households.
The estimate shows that workers’ deaths attributed to HIV and AIDS are projected to fall to 425,000 worldwide within 2020, from 1.3 million within 2005; with people within their late-30s the most affected. In addition to the toll on lives, the estimate shows that the disease costs milliards of dollars in lost earnings — largely due to the hundreds of thousands of preventable HIV- and AIDS-related deaths.
«This is the age workers are normally at the peak of their productive life,» Guy Ryder, ILO Director-General, admits.
«These deaths are totally avoidable if treatment is scaled up and fast-tracked,» he adds.
As to him, an «urgent effort» is needed worldwide to improve treatment, step up testing and ensure healthier and more productive workplaces.
