FAO launches a project to combat Ukrainian soil degradation
08.05.2018 13:36 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) —
The FAO (UN Food and Agriculture Organization) is going to launch a project within Ukraine to combat the country soil degradation, Interfax-Ukraine says referring the FAO report.
As to the report, the project aims is to achieve Ukrainian soil zero degradation.
«The new FAO project is to help Ukraine achieve a balance between the processes of land degradation and its natural and artificial recovery. The project is to last 3 years; within this period the legislative and institutional structure is to improve, and integrated natural resource management methods are to be implemented into practice.
In addition, the project will be focused on the implementation of the standards of planting of the linear type of protective forest belts (with the standards to be implemented up to the characteristics of soils and natural zones) on the spread of climate-oriented agriculture as a general approach for the agro-industrial activity conducting,» the report runs.
As to the report, the project demonstration activities are planned to take place within the Kyiv, Kharkiv and Mykolaiv regions (the territories that represent different natural and climatic zones).
As to FAO, the area of degraded/ unproductive arable soil within Ukraine exceeds 20% of the country total arable soil. Every year, due to erosion, almost 300600 million tons soil are lost. Depending on the level of degradation processes, yields can get reduced by 50%, with Ukrainian total losses from agricultural products’ shortage possible to exceed UAH20 milliard per year.
As to the earlier report, after signing the UN Convention on Combating Desertification, Ukraine committed itself to restore degraded lands and soils until 2030 and strive to achieve a neutral level of lands degradation.
In meanwhile, Ukrainian Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources Ostap Semerak admits within Ukraine there are over 1.1 million hectares of degraded, unproductive and technologically polluted soils which are to be put under conservation. Besides, the Minister also notes the current measures on reclamation of the already disturbed soils are carried out inefficiently.
