UN: Food insecurity outlook has never been so dire for South Sudan

27.02.2018 08:02 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — If there is no sustained humanitarian assistance and access, over 7 million people within the crisis-torn South Sudan (almost two-thirds of the population) could become severely food insecure within the coming months, UN Radio says referring to three United Nations agencies’ (FAO, the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the UN World Food Programme (WFP) joint report. It is to be admitted, one year ago famine was declared within some parts of South Sudan. In meanwhile, Serge Tissot, the Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Representative to South Sudan, admits the situation is extremely fragile, and another famine is near. Should this happen, it will be the highest-ever number of food insecure people within South Sudan. «If we ignore them, we’ll be faced with a growing tragedy. If farmers receive support to resume their livelihoods, we will see a rapid improvement in the country’s food security situation due to increased local production,» he says. As to him, the period of greatest risk will be the lean season, between this year May and Jul. As to the report, the progress in preventing hunger-related deaths could be slowed, and so more people than ever could be pushed into severe hunger and famine-like conditions during May-July unless assistance and access are maintained. As to the report, there are 155,000 people, including 29,000 children, at risk — who could suffer from the most extreme levels of hunger.
