Verkhovna Rada makes Dec 25 non-working holiday

16.11.2017 15:24 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — The Verkhovna Rada has approved a bill on making Dec 25 an official non-working holiday, Ukrinform reports. As to the report, a total of 237 MPs voted in favor of bill No.5496 on amendments to the Labor Code on holiday and non-working days. Reportedly, the bill stipulates the recognition of Dec 25 as an official day off within Ukraine. Also, the lawmakers supported a proposal of Verkhovna Rada Chairman Andriy Parubiy and canceled the day off on May 2 so that not to boost the total number of non-working days within the country. So from now on, Ukrainians will mark Labor Day only one day, on May 1. As to statistics provided by the Ukrainian Culture Ministry department of religious affairs and nationalities, over 23,000 current religious Orthodox, Greek Catholic and some other Christian communities celebrate Christmas on January 7 up to the Julian calendar. At the same time, at present within Ukraine there are about 11,000 religious Catholic and Protestant communities (about 30% of all religious organizations within Ukraine) that celebrate Christmas on Dec 25 up to the Gregorian calendar.
