Ukrainian 2015 food import down 42%

Within 2015, Ukrainian food import fell 41.5%, down to US$3.8 milliard, due to the Ukrainian population declining purchasing power and the domestic market prices’ boost for imported products caused by the weakening of the national currency, UNIAN says referring to the Ukrainian National Scientific Center «Institute of Agrarian Economics» Deputy Director Pugachov report.
«In 2015, Ukraine imported US$3.8 milliard worth of farm produce, down 41.5% against 2014 - with 2014 food import totaling US$6.4 milliard,» Pugachov admitted.
As to him, within 2015, the share of agricultural import from Europe lifted to 45% (up against 42% in 2014). Major European shippers were Germany, Poland, France, Italy and Spain (accounting for 29% of Ukrainian total food import).
As to Pugachov, within 2015, the Asian countries, including Turkey, Indonesia, India and China, also kifted their food import to Ukraine to 20.3% (up against 19.1% in 2014).
At the same time, the share of CIS [Commonwealth of Independent States] countries in Ukrainian food imports lowed to 9.1% in 2015 (down against 12% within 2014), mainly due to the breakdown in trade between Ukraine and Russia.
As to the report, within 2015, nuts and fruits (mainly citrus fruits and bananas) dominated in the structure of the Ukrainian food import, being estimated at US$466 million. The import of tobacco products amounted to US$404 million, that of fish and crustaceans - US$291 million. Ukraine also imported US$194 million worth of cocoa and chocolate, US$186 million of coffee, tea and spices, as well as US$132 million of oils, mainly palm and coconut oils.
