OCHA: Humanitarian crises worldwide show "no sign of abating"

17.06.2015 09:17 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — As of now, the humanitarian crises across 37 countries worldwide show no sign of abating, UN Radio reports referring to the OCHA (UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs) newest mid-year overview of the global humanitarian response. As to the report, the newest overview says the UN is mow doing more for people than ever before, but the system is under unprecedented strain. It is to be reminded, at the beginning of 2015, the OCHA was aiming to assist more than 57 million people in 22 countries. However, 6 months later, it is already calling for help to support close to 79 million people across 37 countries. The new workload includes the crises in Burundi, Djibouti, Guatemala, Honduras, Libya, Nepal, the Sahel, Vanuatu and Yemen — what results in the boost of the global financial requirements for the remainder of the year to a record US$18.8 milliard. The OCHA is underlining that each year, millions of people do not get the help they need because access is compromised, or because funding does not come through. The OCHA overview says the global humanitarian appeal currently remains just 26% funded half-way through the year.
