Ministry of Agrarian Policy forecasts 2006 wheat crop 30% shortening, down to 13-14 million tons

22.03.2006 12:32 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) — Ministry of Agrarian Policy forecasts this year wheat crop will decline to 13 million tons, down 5.7 million tons (- 30% ) against 2005, reported Oleksandr Baranivskiy, Minister of Agrarian Policy, on Mar 20 press-conference. As to Baranivskiy, crop decline is to be explained with winter sown wheat partial destruction. As to him, Ministry of Agrarian Policy will do all possible to minimize this year wheat crop losses. Baranivskiy made it known agrarians are set to enlarge spring wheat sown areas in order to compensate winter wheat sown areas damages. As earlier reported, 2005 wheat crop had grown to 18.699 million tons (in terms of weight after additional processing), up 6.7% against 2004. 2005 wheat average yield equaled to 2.85t/ha (down against 3.17t/ha in 2004); within 2005 agrarians have harvested wheat at 6.571.000 ha (up as of 5.533.700 ha in 2004). 2005 winter wheat crop totaled 17.683 million tons (spring wheat — 1.016 million tons), with agricultural companies having grown 15.307 million tons wheat (up against 14.582 million tons in 2004) and individual economies/population — 3.391 million tons (up as of 2.938 million tons in 2004). 2005 grain crop totaled 38.015 million tons, down against 41.808 million tons as of 2004.
