Kyrylenko Forecasts Low Barley Yield In 2003 Because Of Failure To Sow It Within Optimum Period
18.04.2003 "Agro Perspectiva" (Kyiv) - Deputy Prime Minister Ivan Kyrylenko has forecast that the yield of this year’s spring barley will be low because of the failure to sow it during the optimum period, as a result of which barley crops did not develop properly. Kyrylenko made the forecast to journalists on Tuesday evening. According to him, the sowing of spring crops has not yet started because of unfavorable conditions. Meanwhile, according to him, the optimum period of sowing early crops, including barley, will end on April 10. According to Agricultural Policy Minister Serhii Ryzhuk, it is difficult to forecast acceleration of the sowing campaign because of the lack of a clear weather forecast for the coming month. At the same time, Ryzhuk said that farmers were ready for the spring sowing campaign and that agricultural enterprises would start it stabilization of the weather conditions. The Agricultural Policy Ministry forecasts that farmers will sow 7.3 million hectares of grain and leguminous crops, including 4.8 million hectares of early grain crops. As Ukrainian News earlier reported, farmers have sown 283,000 hectares of early grain crops, including barley. The Agricultural Policy Ministry forecasts that barley cultivation will increase by 140,000 hectares or 3% to 4,640,000 hectares this year, compared with 2002. The barley harvest increased by 247,000 tons or 2.3% to 10,812,000 tons in 2002, compared with 2001. The barley yield in 2002 was 24.9 centners per hectare, compared with 26 centners per hectare in 2001. Farmers sowed barley on 4.5 million hectares in 2002 but harvested 4.1 million hectares. Farmers have been actively cultivating barley in the past few years because of a high demand from exporters. (Ukrainian News)
